Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin Supports Wisconsin Ratepayers
Opposes Senate Bill 28: Right of First Refusal Protections
Madison, WI – For the third consecutive session, Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin (AFP-WI) will join a diverse coalition of consumer advocates and businesses to protect Wisconsin ratepayers from increasing energy bills. Known as Right of First Refusal (ROFR), Senate Bill 28 would eliminate free-market competition, resulting in higher energy costs for families and businesses across Wisconsin.
Wisconsin, previously recognized for having some of the lowest electricity rates in the nation, now ranks as the second highest in the Midwest. The Wisconsin Public Service Commission has approved an additional $550 million in electric and natural gas rates for 2025 and 2026, bringing the total increase to $2 billion since 2019. Any policy that further raises utility bills presents a substantial financial burden on households already facing challenges in managing their utility costs.
AFP-WI State Director Megan Novak released the following statement:
“With the third attempt to pass this anti-free market legislation, it is no surprise that the more exposure this policy receives, the less support it has. We appreciate the legislators who continue to believe in protecting competition and prioritizing what is best for Wisconsin ratepayers, not utilities’ profit margins. AFP-WI rejects this legislation, once again, and thanks the members who continue to stand up for the families and businesses in their districts.”
